school INVOLVEMENT

High school students have toured Berg’s Brisbane site to learn more about a career in manufacturing and welding.

The site hosted year-10 students from St. Patrick’s College discussing supply chain, engineering and project management.

Berg Engineering Operations Manager Paul Otway said manufacturing, like any industry, needs new people coming in to learn and take up roles as people retire.

“It’s really rewarding to host a teenager who maybe hasn’t included a career in manufacturing or welding in their future yet, and for them to hear from us about how we’ve had a career last decades, that we’ve supported our families, that we’ve been able to stay in Brisbane while working for Berg, it’s my favourite part of the tour – that education piece,” Otway said.

“I really love championing this industry and hosting the schools is a fantastic way to educate them on what a career in manufacturing and welding and with Berg can bring them.”

Women Who Weld

St Patrick’s College hosted a group of 10 St John Fisher College students to participate in the Women Who Weld program. Provided by theManufacturing Queensland, Berg sponsored the program which provides students with an opportunity to develop skills and learn about metal engineering career pathways.

WWW aims to provide an opportunity and safe environment for young women to try the practical skill of welding.

This provides the student with an understanding of welding and an idea if STEAM school subjects and a trade career pathway is something they wish to explore further.

With the goal of building gender diversity in the workplace, ‘Women Who Weld’ aims to address our national trade skills shortage. The program encourages young women to consider a trade pathway where 76% of jobs within Queensland’s manufacturing sector are occupied by men.

Following the successful rollout of the ‘Women Who Weld’ Program in the Surat Basin sponsored by, results have shown a 20% rise in female interest in trade pathways.
